Reliance suspends well due to problem with Transocean BOP

The Deepwater Expedition.
(5/26/2010 - OGI: Mumbai) Operator Reliance Industries has temporarily suspended its exploration well offshore India due to unresolved mechanical issues associated with the blowout preventer (BOP) of Transocean's Deepwater Expedition drillship.
Hardy Oil, Reliance's partner in the project in the Krishna Godavari Basin deepwater well, said today that the KGV-D3-W1 well was drilled to a measured depth of 2,608 meters where immediate casing was set. Subsequently, Reliance spent a considerable amount of time attempting to resolve a problem with the control system of the drillship's BOP. The operator was unable to resolve the issue to its satisfaction and, mindful of safety and operational matters, has taken the decision to suspend the well. Reliance intends to re-enter the well at the earliest possible opportunity, with an alternative deepwater rig.
Transocean is the owner of the Deepwater Horizon semisubmersible drilling rig that suffered a blowout last month resulting in the deaths of 11 crewmembers, the sinking of the rig, and a massive oil spill in the US Gulf of Mexico.
The KGV-D3-W1 exploration well is located in waters 1,653 meters in depth. The target measured depth of the well, which aims to explore the hydrocarbon potential of Mio-Pliocene sands, is 3,514 meters. The KG-DWN-2003/1 (D3) license is located off the east coast of India and covers an area of approximately 3,288 sq km. Reliance is the operator with 90% interest in partnership with Hardy, holding the remaining 10%.
