Blowout in Kurd Iraq brought under control

(6/13/2010 - OGI: Calgary) WesternZagros Resources' Kurdamir-1 exploration well in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been brought into control and local residents who were evacuated from the nearby Kurdamir village have not been permitted to return to their homes.
The company reported today that the well has been secured and that specialists from Boots & Coots, together with personnel from WesternZagros and Talisman (Block K44) are currently installing the snubbing unit in order to attempt to recover the remaining drillstring from the well and complete well kill operations. IT said that it has received confirmation of well control insurance coverage and approval for the first interim payment of US$5.7 million from 100% of the insurance syndicate. The company has received proceeds of $4.8 million to date and continues to submit interim insurance claims related to the well control and sidetracking efforts at its Kurdamir-1 well.
Kurdamir-1 is a wildcat exploration well in the Kalar Bawanoor Block, operated by WesternZagros in partnership with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Talisman.
