Another oil spill in Danish North Sea near Hess field

The South Arne platform.
(6/23/2010 - OGI: London) The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reported an oil spill of unknown source in the Danish sector of the North Sea near the South Arne Field, operated by Hess.
A spokesperson for the EPA, Juliane Albjerg, said today that the spill covers approximately six sq km and is estimated to be around 820 bbl of oil. It was discovered yesterday by a reconnaissance flight. She said that Dansk Olie og Naturgas (DONG) subsidiary DONG Energy, which is operating the jackup drilling rig Maersk Resolute on the South Arne Field on behalf of Hess, has dispatched a clean-up vessel to collect the oil from the surface of the water, but fog has prevented the operation so far.
Albjerg said that because the spill is small, most of it can be skimmed from the water and the rest will evaporate. "We don't expect it to reach land," she said.
Hess advised today that it does not believe the spill came from either the South Arne Field or the Maersk Resolute.
On 3 June, another oil spill was reported near Maersk's Dan and Halfdan platforms, not far from the South Arne Field. It is currently under investigation by the EPA.
