Update:
ConocoPhillips to solve snoring problem on Ekofisk
(6/8/2004 - OGI: Oslo) ConocoPhillips was told today it must remodel its
Ekofisk platform accommodation facilities so that its crew can sleep
undisturbed by snoring and other noises made by cabin mates. The company
said the renovation of the veteran platform facilities will cost about
US$330 million to accomplish.
The problem on Ekofisk is that most of its workers share sleeping
accommodations rather than have private cabins, and as a consequence, the
Norwegian government's Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) said, crewmen may
fail to get adequate rest and thus be impaired in their activities, which
could result in accidents.

The PSA said, "ConocoPhillips Norway is not operating in compliance with the
regulatory requirements for rest and restitution on the installations where
there is a high degree of shared sleeping quarters." It ordered the company
to provide a detailed plan to remedy the situation on by the Ekofisk and
Eldfisk installations by 1 October. It said all other operators on the
Norwegian shelf have complied with instructions to assure crewmen get
adequate rest. There are approximately 1,000 workers on Ekofisk, a third
sharing living facilities.
ConocoPhillips spokesman Ingvar Solberg said the company is considering
appealing the ruling, but added it has a new flotel planned for the Ekofisk
Center that is scheduled to be ready for occupation in 2010.
