Oil spill off Peninsular Malaysia from East Belumut Field

(7/12/2010 - OGI: Singapore) The oil sheen reported last week offshore Peninsular Malaysia has been determined to have come from a pipeline operated by Newfield Exploration on behalf of Petronas that connects the East Belumut platform in Block PM323 to the Tinggi platform some 27 km distant.
Newfield reported today that the pipeline was damaged by the activities of an unidentified marine vessel unrelated to the company's operations. It said that the output from the field has been shut-in and the leak has been isolated and repairs begun.
ExxonMobil, partner to Petronas Carigali in the East Belumut Field and Block PM323, said emergency response and oil spill teams were immediately dispatched on Saturday and that most of the oil on the surface of the water has been collected.

"The sheen was sighted near facilities operated by Petronas' production sharing contractors Petronas Carigali, ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Malaysia, and Newfield Peninsular Malaysia" said ExxonMobil. "Production pipelines at the affected area have been shut down as a mitigation measure. The contractors have cleaned up the majority of the sheen and are now monitoring the situation via aerial and marine surveillance.

The East Belumut platform.

The East Belumut Field is located approximately 257 km offshore Peninsular Malaysia in 240 ft of water. The field was producing approximately 20,000 b/d of oil prior to shut-in. The company estimates that repairs to the pipeline will take six to eight weeks to complete and return the East Belumut Field to production. Newfield operates Block PM323 with a 60% interest with ExxonMobil and Petronas Carigali holding the remaining interest.
