CNPC export pipeline explodes & burns in Dalian

(718/2010 - OGI: Shanghai) An explosion late Friday night engulfed a complex of oil pipelines at the port of Dalian, China that belong to China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and its subsidiary PetroChina.
According to local reports today, the explosion destroyed the pipelines and associated infrastructure in the port and burned for 15 hours before being extinguished yesterday. Officials said there were no fatalities but provided no information about those injured in the conflagration. They said, however, that approximately 10,650 bbl of oil was spilled into the water at the port and that it has affected about 50 sq km of the ocean surrounding Dalian, which is the location of the Dalian Forest & Wildlife Park with many scenic areas along the seashore in danger of pollution by the floating oil. The company and various governmental units have a clean-up program underway and some 355 bbl of oil has already been collected from the water, while the air in Dalian is still said to be unsafe because of chemicals released by the fire.

The cause of the explosion and fire is still not known but they were fed by oil stored at the port that had been piped from PetroChina's Liaohe and other oilfields in the Liaoning Province. To facilitate exploitation of those fields, CNPC has been significantly expanding its facilities at Dalian and had scheduled investment of approximately US$20.6 billion in investment in China's northeastern region from 2011 to 2015.
