Lake Maracaibo's Tomoporo Field to see 4 new wells
(6/9/2004 - OGI: Caracas) Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) said today it is
making preparations to commence a four-well drilling program on the Tomoporo
Field in Venezuela's Lake Maracaibo later this year.
Output from Tomoporo presently stands at approximately 100,000 b/d, but
PDVSA is pursuing a new production enhancement program that calls for the
Tomoporo Field to be revved up to a production of some 152,000 b/d by the
end of next year. PDVSA is also planning to drill a fifth well in the La
Franquera Field near Tomoporo.

According to sources at the Venezuelan national oil company, PDVSA is
already at its capacity output and has to drive up its production to meet
its quota set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) at
2.93 million b/d. To do that, the company intends to invest some US$26
billion in exploration and production during the coming five years, which
will include outlays for the drilling of approximately 3,800 new wells,
workover of another 5,500 wells, and upgrading and maintenance on 111 rigs
currently in operation.
